We are pleased to announce the opening of the TAMBA GATEWAY CENTER, a new hub facility dedicated to deepening visitors’ understanding of the history and culture of Tamba ware, located within the Tamba Traditional Craft Park “Sue no Sato.”
Tamba Tachikui is one of Japan’s pottery production areas with an unbroken history of approximately 850 years, where ceramics have been continuously handcrafted since the Heian period. It is also recognized as one of the “Six Ancient Kilns of Japan,” a designation under the Japan Heritage program. At this center, visitors can explore both the historical development and the contemporary expressions of Tamba ware from a variety of perspectives.
At the entrance, a vibrant mosaic tile artwork made from Tamba ware welcomes visitors, serving as a gateway that inspires encounters with local kilns and artisans.
Inside the center, exhibitions focusing on the works of contemporary ceramic artists, along with special exhibition galleries and showcases, present the rich cultural appeal of Tamba ware through diverse themes and approaches.
On the second floor, a new café has also opened. Visitors can select their favorite cup, enjoy coffee and other refreshments, and relax while reflecting on the exhibition experience. The café is equipped with a children’s play area and a nursing room, ensuring a comfortable visit for guests with children.
