Your journey through Tamba Ware begins here

Gateway to Cultural Tourism in the Tachikui Area

Sue-no-Sato is a comprehensive facility located in the heart of Tachikui, the home of Tamba Ware surrounded by abundant nature, where you can “see,” “learn,” “experience,” and “enjoy” Tamba Ware.
As the gateway to cultural tourism in the Tachikui area—where kiln studios line the streets—we invite you to begin your visit here.

Kiln Alley

Approximately 50 kiln studios exhibit and sell a wide variety of ceramic works. From traditional Tamba Ware to artistic contemporary pieces, you can encounter the diverse expressions of Tamba Ware today. You may discover a kiln that interests you here, then visit the studio in person afterward.

Pottery Workshop

Challenge yourself to create an original piece. In the pottery workshop, you can enjoy clay hand-building or painting, whether on your own or with family and friends. Beginners are always welcome. Your finished piece will be fired at a Tamba Ware kiln, so please look forward to seeing how the colors and textures turn out. There is also a pottery shop where you can purchase essential tools and Tamba clay (No. 1 clay) for your creations.

A pottery shop is also available, offering a variety of pottery tools essential for creation, as well as Tamba clay (No. 1 clay). These items are available next to the classroom reception counter.

TAMBA GATEWAY CENTER (Regional Folk Craft Preservation and Training Facility)

In addition to galleries featuring works by contemporary ceramic artists, there is a special exhibition room and showcase displays. At the entrance, vibrant mosaic tile art made of Tamba Ware welcomes visitors as an inviting gateway that inspires you to meet the potters themselves. The café offers a relaxing space to linger and reflect after viewing the exhibitions.

Traditional Industry Hall (Tamba Tachikui Ware Traditional Industry Hall)

This hall displays outstanding examples of “Ko-Tamba” (Old Tamba Ware) from the Kamakura to Edo periods, along with the latest works by approximately 50 contemporary artists. You can appreciate the distinctive beauty of Tamba Ware, including its natural green hues, red clay slip, white tones, and other uniquely expressive surfaces. An introductory video about Tamba Ware is also available.

Restaurant “Shishigin”

A Japanese restaurant featuring ingredients from Tamba. In addition to meals, you can enjoy handmade cakes and kuromame (black soybean) coffee in a relaxed café setting. A selection of Tamba souvenirs is also available, and group reservations are welcome.
